About the American Dream School

The American Dream High School is a dual-language (Spanish/English) middle and high school in the Mott Haven neighborhood of the South Bronx. We offer a project-based, dual-language program that cultivates bilingualism and biliteracy.

  About the Position

The American Dream Charter High School is seeking a bilingual (Spanish/English), motivated, and engaging Health Educator who is committed to serving English Language Learners and cultivating bilingualism and biliteracy. The ideal candidate is charismatic, culturally responsive, and passionate about adolescent health and wellness. This candidate will be responsible for teaching health topics with a strong emphasis on human development, sexuality, mental and emotional well-being, substance abuse prevention, nutrition, decision-making, and personal responsibility. Instruction will be grounded in a trauma-informed, inclusive, and age-appropriate approach that empowers students to make informed choices and reduce risky behaviors.

Responsibilities

Curriculum & Instruction

  • Deliver engaging, student-centered lessons aligned to Health Education Standards and a rigorous scope & sequence for High School Health Education.
  • Prepare culturally relevant and developmentally appropriate health lessons that address the needs of male and female students, including English Language Learners.
  • Facilitate lessons on topics such as healthy relationships, consent, sexual and reproductive health, substance abuse prevention, stress management, nutrition, and digital wellness.
  • Create a safe and inclusive classroom environment where all students feel comfortable discussing sensitive health topics.
  • Incorporate project-based learning, role-play, multimedia, and real-world scenarios into instruction to promote student engagement and critical thinking.
  • Assess student understanding through formative and summative assessments and adapt instruction based on student data.
    Submit progress reports and report card grades in a timely manner.

Classroom & Student Support

  • Provide additional academic and social-emotional support to students as needed, including small group or one-on-one instruction.
  • Implement trauma-informed strategies and behavior management techniques to support student well-being.
  • Maintain accurate records of student performance and behavior in accordance with school protocols.
  • Support a positive school culture by reinforcing school-wide expectations and core values.

Teaching & Special Education Responsibilities

  • Tutor and assist children individually or in small groups
  • Assist in the distribution, collection and grading of tests and homework assignments
  • Observe students' performance, and record relevant data to assess progress
  • Participate in teacher-parent conferences regarding students’ progress or problems
  • Implement IEP accommodations and modifications as required for students with disabilities. 
  • Contribute to IEP goal-setting and write Present Levels of Performance (PLOPs) related to health instruction. 
  • Participate in IEP meetings and progress monitoring discussions.

Classroom Management Responsibilities

  • Supervise and manage students in all spaces, upholding ADS core values, rules and policies
  • Instruct, maintain, and monitor students in the use and care of equipment and material
  • Maintain accurate records and create reports 

Additional Responsibilities

  • Perform other assigned duties
  • Following a co-teaching model
  • Community Outreach

Position Requirements

• Bilingual Spanish/English;

• New York State Teaching Certification in Health  Education 7-12 is preferred.

• Strong organizational skills;

• Maintain confidentiality and meets deadlines, complete assignments with consistent accuracy;

• Tech-savvy; familiarity and experience with Microsoft Office, Gmail, Google docs/drive; 

• Effective verbal, writing and listening skills.
