Position Summary

The Screed Operator Trainee works under close supervision to assist with the setup and operation of the screed on an asphalt paver. This entry-level role is designed for individuals who are new to the paving industry and looking to learn the trade. The trainee will support the paving crew while gaining hands-on experience with equipment, safety protocols, and quality standards.

Responsibilities:

  • Comply with (and actively promote) all Safety policies and procedures including reporting all accidents, incidents and near misses to ensure adherence to our Number One Core Value – Safety, first in everything we do.
  • Assist with setting up and maintaining a safe work zone.
  • Learn to control the material flow and screed depth under supervision.
  • Support operators in maintaining smooth and consistent asphalt finishes.
  • Be present and on time for the Daily Huddle and Weekly Toolbox Talks.
  • Participate in job site clean-up and general labor tasks as directed.
  • Help with minor maintenance tasks and learn how to complete Equipment Condition Reports.
  • Develop an understanding of project specifications and how they apply to screed operation.
  • Maintain physical ability to lift up to 50 lbs. and perform tasks that involve bending, pushing, pulling, stooping, and twisting.
  • Remain flexible to work day or night shifts, and extended hours as needed.
  • Take direction from experienced operators and supervisors and ask questions to build knowledge.

Qualifications:

  • High school diploma or GED certificate.
  • 0-1 year of experience in the paving industry.
  • No prior screed or paving experience required—just a willingness to learn.
  • Must be reliable and eager to work in a team environment.
